Why I Won't Use KMail or Kontact

01/06/2008  II
Relevance: 5.52
KDE 4 is scheduled to be released soon, and it looks like it has a lot of cool new features. Unfortunately, everything I've seen about it says that it's still going to be missing an important feature that many computer users (especially Windows convert to Linux) absolutely require and have come to expect— apparently because a few developers don't like or use that feature. And to make matters worse, every time I've ever seen anyone complain about it, many of the responses have tried to convince them that"no one needs" that feature. In other words,"I don't use that feature, so you shouldn't have a choice to use it." I think the whole situation is an embarrassment to the entire Linux community, because it reinforces the (mostly untrue) stereotype that Linux users are antisocial, elitist geeks.

Fedora 9 Preview review

04/20/2008  III
Relevance: 4.85
While the ability to create a LiveUSB stick from the LiveCD media has been a feature of Fedora for a while, a new feature in Fedora 9 is the ability to have persitant data. I originally thought that the persistant data feature was only for user data but as it turns out it applies to the complete system... so not only can you store your documents... you can also install updates, new applications, create accounts, and save settings. There is nothing special you have to do... it works just like a hard drive would.

Linux: Moving 4K Stacks Forward

08/18/2007  III
Relevance: 4.68
In a series of 5 patches, Jesper Juhl propsed moving 4K stacks from a debug feature to a non-debug feature, defaulting it to be enabled in the -mm tree. He referred back to a lengthy earlier discussion in which he had proposed making 4K stacks the default in the mainline kernel, then added:"Based on the comments in that thread I conclude that 4KSTACKS are not really considered a debug-only feature any longer, but the time is not right (yet) to make them the default - and it's certainly not yet the time to get rid of 8K stacks."

Comparison of free software shooters

01/03/2008  IIII
Relevance: 4.44
About a week ago, Joe Barr posted a feature on Linux.com titled"New Alien Arena 6.10 blows away its FPS competition" yet gave no real comparisons with other similar games, regretable since his conclusion was that it"blows away its competition". This was done in the same style as Barr's previous feature,"Tremulous: The best free software game ever?" which described Tremulous but also lacked comparisons and relations to other games. This feature hopes to be a thorough comparison of the major free software shooters.

For a long time, hibernation has been associated with proprietary operating systems. Now, the feature has started taking the front row in GNU/Linux systems too. What’s more, it’s fast, flexible and is a real time saver!

Desktop Linux: Can Your Users Even Handle Windows?

05/01/2007  IIII
Relevance: 4.41
The trouble with most comparisons between desktop Linux distros and Windows is that they are written from the perspective of someone who is comfortable enough with a PC that they can undertake a feature-for-feature comparison in the first place.

No XO Printer Support is a Feature Not a Bug

10/24/2008  I
Relevance: 4.36
When I present the XO to people, I indicate that the lack of printer support is a feature, not a bug. The issue I see is one of sustainability. We cannot replicate our US lifestyle at a global level, there is just so much that Gaia can take. What we can afford here, as the biggest consumers of resources in the world, at an expense to the whole world, we cannot consider as the parameter to reproduce elsewhere.
