Multimedia on your bad-ass Debian Etch Desktop

02/13/2007  II
Relevance: 5.66
I dig the fact that within about 1 minutes time (while, before, after) installing my desktop, I can be groovin' on my favorite tunes or catching a funny video online. OK -- I don't watch that many videos, but sometimes the chillen and I will watch some movie previews on apple trailers. We say things like" COOL! and"that was darn cool" is a favorite of my almost-six-year-old. How 'bout you? Got music?

12/16/2007  I
Relevance: 5.37
I found out through Distrowatch that the next release of Damn Small Linux, version 4.2, will replace Xpaint with the unusually light, highly usable MtPaint -- pretty much my favorite Linux image editor. (If it dealt with IPTC info in JPGs, it would be my favorite photo-editing program on all platforms.)

Korn -- an extended shell

05/05/2008  IIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.35
Everyone knows what a Linux shell is -- you open up a Linux terminal window (such as Konsole or xterm), type in some commands, and there you are, using your Linux shell. Write your commands to a file, make it executable, run it, and you're a shell programmer. But did you know that there are different shells that you can use, and that each shell operates in a slightly different way? My personal favorite is the Korn shell; by the end of this article, it may be your favorite as well.

Relevance: 5.20
Organizing your favorite Web sites with bookmarks on Firefox can be tedious, especially when you want to keep your bookmarks synchronized across several computers at the same time. That's why I started using del.icio.us, the social bookmarking service now owned by Yahoo! Besides allowing me to access my bookmarks from any computer at any time, del.icio.us does a great job on keeping my bookmarks organized with tags instead of folders, and I can easily share my favorite Web sites with my friends.

YouTube clips are everywhere these days, and I must admit I'm addicted to the site. Nevertheless, I've had a couple of small annoyances with YouTube videos. I wanted to be able to play my favorite ones on standalone DVD/DivX players. I also found I couldn't go backwards or forwards when playing the site's Flash videos with MPlayer. For those reasons, I decided to convert my favorite YouTube videos to DivX or XviD formats. Here's how you can do the same.

Major open source projects like GNOME, KDE, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and Apache all have something in common -- they all have Planet feed reader sites set up to aggregate developer blog feeds.
