Dog-and-pony-show

Is Red Hat still relevent? You bet.

Relevance: 7.90
I recently attended a Linux Installfest and the primary distribution recommended by those heading up the event was Ubuntu. That's all well and good but during their Linux dog-and-pony-show a statement was made regarding Red Hat that struck me. I don't recall the exact wording that was used but it was something along the lines of...Red Hat used to be very popular but not anymore. I wasn't really offended by the statement nor do I completely disagree with it... but a lot remains to be said about the importance of Red Hat within the Linux community. Red Hat is certainly king in the"Enterprise" space with Novell a respectable second... but not everyone seems to be aware of just how much Red Hat contributes to the development of many projects and how they are a major mover in the progression of Linux.

MS to OEMs: Get legit on Vista, or the OS is toast

06/05/2007  IIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.86
Last week, Microsoft sent certified letters to its OEM partners regarding Vista's anti-piracy technology -- or, more accurately, what happens if they dare ship a system with a"non-genuine" copy of Vista. The answer: The system is crippled for 30 days, then hosed entirely until you pony up for a license. This is apparently what Microsoft means when it warns of a"diminished user experience."

It did what it was designed to do...Lindependence 2008, that is. Not only was it to bring Linux to new users, it was to incite others to copy the effort. It worked. This time, it's the city of Portland Oregon that is hosting Lindependence. Will they convert the whole city? Geek please. What they will do however is prove that our instincts were right...LIndependence wasn't a one trick pony. And the two guys that are making the Portland Penguin Parade happen? Are they as diametrically opposed politically and socially as Larry and Ken? Let's take a look.

Red Hat plots re-org to deal with JBoss woes

09/25/2007  IIIIII
Relevance: 5.52
Red Hat is suffering from JBoss reflux, according to a pair of prominent open source software watchers. Credit Suisse analyst Jason Maynard has issued a fresh report in which he downgrades Red Hat to"neutral" from"outperform" due to what he sees as organizational struggles. The analyst once thought Red Hat's digestion of JBoss would result in a strong sales increase. Instead, Red Hat faces serious challenges learning how to be more than a one-trick Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) pony.
