Ten fantastic keyboard shortcuts in OpenOffice.org

06/27/2008  II
Relevance: 7.19
A lot of software users I meet seem to feel they are not using their software as efficiently as they could. If that includes you, then listen up. Here is my list of the ten, lesser-known, OpenOffice.org Writer keyboard shortcuts that will help you improve your productivity. When I say"lesser known" I should really say poorly documented or not documented at all. That said, when I've taught on keyboard shortcuts in the past these are the ones that fewer users seem to know of. Something else to note is that although these are all for Writer, you may find some of them in other word processors as well. Read the full story atFSM

The World Sighs as ISO Becomes Irrelevant

04/02/2008  I
Relevance: 5.06
From this point onwards, it is worth starting to argue in favour of ODF because of its merits rather than its ISO rubber stamp. Microsoft has single-handedly redefined the meaning and significance of ISO. It rendered ISO moot. The aggressive lobbying (and at times even well-documented bribery) has not gone unnoticed. It has gone well over the fine line and even involved bullying, smear campaigns, and libel.

Ubuntu Server: Attractive Choice, Paltry Documentation

11/06/2007  IIIII
Relevance: 5.01
Whatever anyone may think of Ubuntu, you can't deny they're busy little critters, stuffing all manner of new things into every release. Which is a splendid thing, and what would make it even better is if they documented all of these wonderful new things. And also the old things. I think it's the worst of the major Linux distributions for documentation.

Creating graphs the old-fashioned way with Ploticus

03/29/2008  II
Relevance: 4.97
Ploticus is a throwback to the days when Unix programs did one thing, and did it well, using a minimum of system resources. Its SourceForge.net page hints at this orientation by describing Ploticus as"non-interactive" software for"just-in-time graph generation." How useful it is depends on what you want to do, whether you use the settings that come with the program or define your own, and your willingness to master a lengthy -- if well-documented -- set of options.

Microsoft OOXML spec 'dangerously flawed'

07/12/2007  I
Relevance: 4.92
Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) document format specification is fatally flawed where it comes to spreadsheets, with many functions filled with careless errors, according to Rob Weir, a systems architect for IBM and a member of various ODF technical committees. Weir documented seven specific problems in a blog post, and said there are others.

Connecting OpenOffice.org to PostgreSQL Via SDBC - An Overview

11/04/2007  III
Relevance: 4.91
Connecting OpenOffice.org to MySQL has been well-documented for some time. For those who use PostgreSQL, however, finding good documentation on using OpenOffice.org with it has been like finding a needle in a haystack. Fortunately, it's much easier now.

Super GRUB Disk--A GRUB Repair Utility

09/21/2008  IIIIIIIIII
Relevance: 4.84
Super GRUB Disk can fix a wide variety of boot-up problems on GRUB-based systems. It's easy to use, yet versatile. And, it's quite well-documented. As good as it is though, it doesn't seem to get a lot of publicity in the Linux press. (I only know about it from perusing a Linux help forum.)

My Debian Adventure

12/17/2007  IIIIIII
Relevance: 4.78
I had been very happily using Mepis Linux full-time instead of Windows since September, 2006. Mepis is an extremely user-friendly distro that's based on Debian. But a growing feeling inside me made me want to see if I could successfully install and configure"unfriendly" Debian itself. A few days ago, I finally got up the courage to install Debian Etch KDE. And I documented every step along the way...

Similar products different philosophy - An iPhone and Neo 1973 comparison

07/10/2007  I
Relevance: 4.72
Even if you live in a cave, you heard about the iPhone--a masterpiece of technology and also a marketing blitzkrieg made by Mr. Jobs. At the same time a very interesting phone has been launched on the market : OpenMoko's Neo 1973. The main feature of the Neo 1973 is openness. All the hardware is documented, and the software is open source. This contrasts greatly with the iPhone which is as closed as a bank vault.
