Linux: Poetry in Documentation

07/25/2007  III
Relevance: 7.93
"Lguest is an adventure, with you, the reader, as Hero," began some documentation for lguest recently submitted by Rusty Russell. The documentation continued,"but be warned; this is an arduous journey of several hours or more! And as we know, all true Heroes are driven by a Noble Goal. Thus I offer a Beer (or equivalent) to anyone I meet who has completed this documentation. So get comfortable and keep your wits about you (both quick and humorous).

Linux: Documentation Translations Merged

07/20/2007  I
Relevance: 7.69
Two new documentation directories were merged into the upcoming 2.6.23 mainline kernel, containing translations of the HOWTO and stable_api_nonsense.txt documents in Japanese and Chinese. Greg KH explained,"here are some patches that add some translations of some procedural documentation files to the Documentation/ tree." Regarding some of the concerns that were expressed with merging translated documentation into the mainline kernel tarball, Greg noted,"these files change _very_ slowly over time, and are quite easy to keep up to date by the translators."

AMD Preparing For Another GPU Documentation Release

11/16/2007  I
Relevance: 7.47
Back on September 6th of this year AMD shocked the open-source community by committing to the development of a new open-source display driver (this driver is now known as RadeonHD) and that they would be providing specifications to the development community. A week later, they set precedence by not only releasing the documentation to the developers but to the everyone! Their first batch of documentation covered the basics for the RV630 and M56 GPUs and was released freely to the public without any Non-Disclosure Agreement! However, they still have much more GPU documentation that has yet to be released. Some simply believe AMD is doing this as a publicity stunt, but today we have new details to share as they prepare for their next GPU documentation release.

Linux: lguest Documentation

08/06/2007  IIIII
Relevance: 7.05
Some entertaining lguest documentation discussed in an earlier story was merged into the mainline kernel with the commit message,"the netfilter code had very good documentation: the Netfilter Hacking HOWTO. Noone ever read it. So this time I'm trying something different, using a bit of Knuthiness." Both Netfliter and lguest, as well as the documentation for both, were written by Rusty Russell. He describes the lguest driver as,"a simple hypervisor for Linux on Linux. Unlike kvm it doesn't need VT/SVM hardware. Unlike Xen it's simply 'modprobe and go'. Unlike both, it's 5000 lines and self-contained."

Automatically generate PHP documentation from Subversion with phpDocumentor

11/05/2007  I
Relevance: 6.85
The longer I program, the more structured my programming methods have become. Currently I am busy playing with generated documentation and unit testing. Generated documentation is an all round great idea, but it has a drawback: You need to generate it all the time. So I set out to use Subversion's post-commit hook to generate fresh documentation for my PHP projects using phpDocumentor. I have written a little Python script that you can call from Subversion's post commit hook. This script scans your subversion project for files that have the phpdoc property set. If any of these have changed, then it regenerates your documentation using phpDocumentor. It can also deal with files that are not kept in your Subversion repository and supports anything also supported by phpDocumentor.

Linux: Translating Kernel Documentation

06/11/2007  IIII
Relevance: 6.85
The translation of a some kernel documentation into Japanese led to a discussion as to whether or not it was appropriate to include translated documentation with the kernel source code. One concern that was expressed was that as the number of included translations grows, so would the size of the kernel. Another concern was the liklihood that as time passes the various translations might become out of date.
