10/12/2007 Relevance: 6.73ISVs desiring to distribute their applications in an appliance form factor are driving the creation of new JeOS Linux Distros such as Ubuntu JeOS and rPath Linux. Others are building their own JeOS-type Linux distros from Red Hat, SuSE and other Linux vendors. This"roll your own" approach can lead to challenges for both the vendor and potential customers.Search further
11/10/2008 Relevance: 6.48The most recent official count of Linux distros put the number at'one hell of a lot'.This is good because it gives us plenty of choice, and choice provides freedom and freedom is good, right? Maybe it can feel as if there's a little too much choice at times, but there's no doubt that the huge variety of distributions makes Linux more interesting. However, trying different distros isn't as easy as experimenting with a new web browser, word processor or even desktop environment.Search further

10/26/2006 Relevance: 6.23A journalist gives her precious advice to GNU/Linux distributors:"Convert your distros into ms windows or mac os, then it'll sell and I'll buy it. I don't care about freedom anyway, it's just that using ms s/w is uncool. I'd rather be in chains than be uncool. Penguins are so cute they must be cool. Otherwise, I don't have a clue."Search further
12/08/2007 Relevance: 5.97Those of you that read my writeup about 'Finding the right distro for my ThinkPad' may wonder how things went with the distros I ended up choosing after a few days of use and if I was able to resolve the few issues that I had found with them. So, as a follow up and for the benefit of those interested in trying out those distros I decided make this post.Search further
11/03/2008 Relevance: 5.87Have you tried the major Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora/RHEL, and OpenSUSE/SLED? Were they not quite right for your needs? The major distros are not the only game in town. Find out the good, the bad, and the ugly about three of the best-known alternatives to the"big" user distros.Search further
01/03/2008 Relevance: 5.54Over the past year or two I've been drifting away from Fedora, Ubuntu, and Mandriva towards distros derived from Slackware for desktop use. The reason is simple: these distributions tend to have the best performance I've found, particularly on older or limited hardware. Slackware itself lacks some graphical tools and user friendly features that more popular distros have but is outstanding in terms of stability and reliability. A number of Slackware derived distros retain those benefits while offering the ease of use many of us have come to expect. AliXe is such a distro, albeit one designed to be small and compact, making it particularly suitable for older hardware. True to it's Canadian heritage, AliXe also offers full support for both French and English despite it's small size.Search further
11/19/2008 Relevance: 5.49There are many options available for Linux distros, over 500. Most of you can make into a server. However, if you are looking for the professional level server that, in my opinion, leads all other distros in functioning as a server then you need to investigate CentOS. Here is a list of the reasons that CentOS is top on my list for a server.Search further
10/08/2008 Relevance: 5.48Sun Microsystems has lost a key individual responsible for getting its aspiring open-source software included in leading Linux distributions. Barton George has quit Sun after 13 years, hard on the heels of having helped secure the inclusion of an open-source friendly version of Sun's Java Development Kit (JDK) - OpenJDK - with major GNU/Linux distros.Search further
09/28/2008 Relevance: 5.44Given the number of Linux distros out there, how did we pick just 14? Some were obvious; the likes of Slackware and Debian have been around since Linus was in short trousers. SUSE, Fedora, Mandriva and Ubuntu are similarly too significant to ignore. What about the others? To survive, a distro must have something to offerâ ' a large userbase, unique features, ease of use â ' something that makes it a little (or a lot) different from the rest. We hope that the selection here is sufficiently varied, but please forgive us if we have omitted your favourite distro â ' try some of the alternatives to see what you may be missing out on.Search further
