Like Your Distro...? We'll see

Did you know that donations to the Tux500 project were being tracked by distro? That's right, when you click the donation link, the first thing you see is a blank field that says"donation for:" That my brethren FanBoi's is where you put your distro of choice. That is where we find out which distro contributed the most. Now...WHO is going to have prime real estate on the engine cowl or spoiler of the car? Will it be VectorLinux? Maybe Mepis or Sabayon...how about Ubuntu. Lord you Ubuntu guys make enough noise. I suppose now we will get to see just how much backing this distro has...or how many noise pollution credits ya'll should purchase.

DisroWatch Featured Story: One year with Puppy Linux

06/28/2007  II
Relevance: 6.29
The sad tale of how the hope and excitement of a promising distro turned to fear and loathing in Linux land. Puppy Linux Most distro reviews focus on installing and using one release of a recent distro. But when people decide to stick with a distro, or abandon it after a longer period of use, the reasons are more to do with the entire distro experience, which includes the distro technology, its package management, the size and reliability of its package repositories, the ease and speed with which bugs are reported and fixed, the quality of the documentation, and the social experience of being part of the distro's community, as exemplified by its forum and IRC channels. Here I relate my personal experiences with Puppy Linux over the course of approximately one year.

Zonbu ScreenShots, This Linux OS is a new refreshing welcome to Windows users who want to use Linux.

10/14/2008  II
Relevance: 6.08
Another fairly new Linux Distro to review. First thing I have to say is that this distro is based off of Gentoo Linux and it is one of the faster LiveDVD distros that I have loaded up2date. Every application loaded up extremely fast. The icons made this distro very nice on the eyes. The extremely quick responsiveness for a live distro was amazing! This Linux OS is perfect for Windows users who want the online accessibility of the MAC. This distro is not for experienced Linux admins what soever!!!! You do not have root access if you install the OS, since it is locked down. You will have to add options to the GRUB boot loader to get root access.

LINdependence 2008 - The way it is Supposed to work.

06/03/2008  IIII
Relevance: 6.05
Many people have gotten the impression that they have to"be somebody" in order to participate or represent their distro during LINdependence 2008. Not only is that untrue, it would probably be counter-productive. Herein we talk about one everyday distro user who saw the value of participating in this project and jumped in with both feet. It will be surprising to many what this small effort is going to yield for his/her distro of choice.

Slackware: the classic distro that's as timely as ever.

09/28/2007  IIIIII
Relevance: 5.87
In a way, Slackware needs no defense. Those that use the distro know of its merits and enjoy its stability, security, simplicity and speed. However, with the growing popularity of newer distros like Ubuntu, more and more articles seem to relegate Slackware to the dust bin of history, or they say it's a hobbyist's distro, or they make snide comments like '1995 called and they want their distro back.' As of late, these comments seem to proliferate at about the same rate as the Ubuntu articles. Using Ubuntu as an example, let's conduct a little examination to see where Slackware's strengths lie and how it compares and differs with the newer upstartdistros of today.

Workbench Linux distro is a workhorse for software developers

09/18/2008  IIIIIII
Relevance: 5.81
If you develop applications using FOSS tools, Workbench is an ideal distro for you. In addition to packing a gamut of development tools, the distro also bundles everyday apps and eye candy, so you can use it on your desktop as well. Workbench is based on Xubuntu, the Xfce-powered Ubuntu flavor, but unlike Xubuntu it doesn't fit on a standard 700MB CD. With all its development tools and productivity apps, Workbench weighs in at 1.4GB. You can download the distro from either a low-speed direct download server or BitTorrent.

DreamLinux Live CD Review

08/16/2007  I
Relevance: 5.63
Right away, as the hype and hot air came oozing off this distro, I could not believe my eyes. On a machine that I have run no less than 13 distributions on, for the first time, I'm looking at what appears to be 640x400 resolution. This is inexcusable, considering no other distro has ever had this problem before.

What is a distro?

05/20/2007  IIIIIII
Relevance: 5.58
I sat through an interesting debate recently on the Austin Linux Group mailing list over the meaning of the term"distro." Some LUG members felt"distro" implies Linux, while others took a wider view, claiming it could be any one of several possible platforms, including OpenSolaris.[Technically, a distribution is any software package, since software is, after all,"distributed", not sold. You can get a distribution of KDE or of Gnumeric or a given programming language or library. - dcparris]

Tiny Zenwalk 5.0 packs a big punch

02/15/2008  III
Relevance: 5.53
Zenwalk, a Slackware-based slim-and-zippy distribution, released a major update last month. The release announcement listed some noticeable enhancements and promised the best support for Wi-Fi you can expect in any Linux distro. Excuse me for being skeptic, but one doesn't expect midget distros to be the best in any field. How well can a single-CD 469MB distro hold up against every other multi-GB DVD distro available today? As it turns out, Zenwalk manages to squeeze in a long list of open source wireless drivers, as well as the proprietary Intel wireless device firmware. Surprisingly Zenwalk 5.0 not only does things you don't expect from a single CD distro, it does them with ease and very little command-line sorcery.

Our guide to building your own online distro

12/08/2008  III
Relevance: 5.47
Wouldn't it be great if you could just click your way to a custom distro? After all, most of the packages you will need are sitting on a well-connected web server somewhere, so it makes sense to build ISO images and repositories directly on that server. And since that server has a HTTP interface, why not make the distro building software into a web application? This is the principle behind www.instalinux.com, created by Chris Slater. It's based on the SystemDesigner CGI scripts from the Linux Common Operating Environment project, originally developed as a tool for internal use at HP, and now released under the GNU GPL.
