Find the DVD containing those files with VVV

08/20/2008  IIIII
Relevance: 8.95
The Virtual Volumes View (VVV) project lets you index your data DVDs and perform searches to figure out whether a given file is backed up and what disc contains it. If you routinely back up a large amount of data onto DVDs, you can simply number your discs and keep them in numerically sorted order. When it comes time to find an image or digital video you burned to DVD, just use VVV to figure out the disc number and quickly locate the right disc in the pile.

From CentOS 3.9 to 4.5

Thanks, Johnny Hughes. He commented on my previous CentOS odyssey, which led me to install version 3.9 on my VIA C3-equipped test box. He said CentOS 4.5 would run on it. I had previously tried the 4.4 live CD, and that wouldn't boot, so I never bothered to burn a 4.5 install disc. Johnny was right. I did burn the first CentOS 4.5 disc, and typing i586 at the boot prompt worked.

Become a multimedia pro with the Vector Linux Multimedia Bonus Disc

Many audio, video, and graphics professionals would like to make the switch to Linux, but don't want to deal with the hassle of figuring out multimedia on Linux or are scared off by the purported lack of such tools. I created Vector Linux Multimedia Bonus Disc (MMBD) to address this problem and perception. It's a complete multimedia creation and production system that contains hundreds of the best multimedia applications available on Linux. The MMBD is an add-on for Vector Linux that installs directly into a preinstalled copy of the distribution. Vector is a Slackware-based distribution that is built for speed and flexibility. Although Slackware is sometimes viewed as an archaic, crude operating system, it is famous for its stability and clean, reliable core.

OpenBSD: The installer isn't easy, but the documentation carries the day

Relevance: 5.18
If you gripe about a console-based installer, even those as relatively"easy" as Debian, the alternative disc for Ubuntu or even Slackware, then doing a BSD installation isn't for you. (Actually, it is, because DesktopBSD and PC-BSD, both of which I've also installed, make it much, much easier.)

Burning a Linux ISO image on CD

01/07/2008  I
Relevance: 5.00
To be able to install a GNU/Linux distribution you need to burn a downloaded ISO image on a CD/DVD disc. At least this is the simplest way to achieve this goal. In this tutorial I am going to describe an easy way to do this under Windows and Linux operating systems and how to prepare your PC for a Linux OS.

Trying to get Hardy? Here's a good mirror for the U.S. ... plus OpenBSD is easy enough -- even for a 4-year-old

We go through this every six months: Ubuntu brings out a new release, and by the time release day comes around, it's murder to get enough bandwidth to grab the damn thing and make a new disc out of it. And no, I don't have any recent Ubuntu installs that I can upgrade, so I need the full ISO. Hence, I'm downloading a Ubuntu 8.04 beta right now.

The Apple way and the Linux way

Today I tried to help a Mac user save some pictures to a DVD. There were more than 1GB of photos, so it made more sense to use a DVD than two CDs. Unfortunately, Mac OS X thinks that you need to make movies when you insert a blank DVD disc -- it has no idea that you want to save data to it. What you, the user, want to do does not matter. All that matters is that you do what Apple says a computer should do. This is"the Apple way," and some people find it enjoyable.

Zenwalk Live 4.8

I'm a sucker for a Linux or BSD distro with a live CD. Even if you can't do an install directly from the disc, at least you can figure out whether the damn thing will boot and how your hardware will react when it does. One of my favorites, ZenWalk, just released Zenwalk 4.8 Live. Both Zenwalk and Vector the top Xfce-based, Slackware-derived distributions are very good, but I like the way Zenwalk looks and works just that much better.

SLAX 6.0.0 pre2 Screenshot Walkthrough

SLAX is fast and beautiful Linux operating system which fits on small (3.14") CD-ROM disc. It runs directly from the CD (or USB) without installing. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware Linux distribution and uses Unification File System (also known as unionfs), allowing read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one, saving all changes to memory.

Should I put Windows XP on my ASUS Eee PC?

02/11/2008  IIIIIII
Relevance: 4.71
The ASUS Eee PC comes pre-loaded with Xandros Linux, an operating system far less susceptible to viruses, spyware, malware and the other nasties that are almost of biblical proportions in the Windows world. So, even though ASUS makes a Windows XP driver disc to allow the easy installation of XP, and is due to start selling the Eee with XP pre-loaded, is XP worth the worry?
