In today's world, web development is all about turnaround. Businesses want to maximize production outcome while minimizing development and production time. This week at LWN: The current development kernel is...linux-next?

07/22/2008  III
Relevance: 4.25
One of the development process advantages brought by git (and by BitKeeper before it) is the ability to see the up-to-the-second, bleeding-edge status of Linus's tree. So any developer who wants to know where the front edge of development lies can grab that tree and make patches fit into it. But the value of the mainline repository for development would appear to be less than it once was. The mainline is no longer where the action is.

Alan Cox on open-source development vs. proprietary development

10/25/2007  III
Relevance: 4.06
Alan Cox emailed me this morning to note a presentation he gave way back in 2000 called"Dear Mr Brooks, or: Software engineering in the free software world." It's no surprise to me that my recent blog post (on the topic of optimally sized development teams) was better articulated by Alan many years ago. What was surprising is just how prescient Alan's talk was. And how informative. For anyone who has ever wondered how open-source software development works compared to proprietary-software development, this is an absolute must read.

Etu 0.1.5 Cut

01/20/2008  II
Relevance: 3.80

A lot of cool stuff has been added to it and for what it is worth development will soon come to and end and it will flip into maintenance mode. In any case - we appreciate the users and hope you enjoy. Seesysthread for details.

The Art of Agile Development

01/21/2008  III
Relevance: 3.67
I suppose I have more than a casual interest in reviewing this book. The software development team I work with operates using agile development. Reviewing this book is for me, a way of becoming more familiar with the people I work with and how they work. I'm not a developer...not in the software sense anyway. They call me a developer of content and that's what I do...provide help files, white papers, and any other documentation to describe the products developed by the folks I work with. While I have had agile development explained to me and have seen it in action every workday of the week for the past two-and-a-half months, it will be interesting to see the"official" version presented by Shore and Warden.
