Wanted: Linux-Powered Replacement for Budget Laptops

01/26/2008  I
Relevance: 6.05
The Eee PC has captured a lot of attention for destroying its competition, but it does not meet the needs of an everyday computer. This is why Linux needs a good alternative to the regular laptops.

Microsoft Doesn't Care About Destroying Linux

07/02/2007  IIIIIII
Relevance: 5.50
Everywhere I turn these days, I continue to hear how 'Novell' sold Linux users down the river. And while I partially agree with this perspective, I do differ with those who say Xandros did the same thing. Xandros is simply looking to make sure that fluidity between the Linux desktop and Windows desktop is as smooth as possible.

Destroying the GPL from the inside

01/06/2008  II
Relevance: 5.47
How do you destroy the GPL? Honestly I don't think it will be done, but there is a way. Simply put the GPL is a copyright license, which is it's strength and it's achillies heel. For years publishing companies, our friends at the RIAA and MPAA among others have pushed for longer and longer copyright terms so that they can reap the rewards from other people's work for a longer period of time. So why not turn things on their heads a bit? Actually, what I'm talking about has already been proposed.

3 Ways to Try Out Linux, For a Windows User

06/17/2008  I
Relevance: 5.09
One of the arguments I often hear from people who are trying to use linux for the first time is that they are not sure if they can switch back to their original choice of OS (usually windows), if they are not satisfied with their experience with linux. These are usually the people who are not as tech savy or previously had bad experience while trying to install linux which resulted in destroying their windows installation. With each iteration of windows OS Microsoft has made it less friendlier for linux to be installed along with windows.

maybe people will understand a picture.

Sometime last night I started a"21 bug salute": pick 21 bugs and fix them one after the other. Closing bugs that are already fixed, are upstream bugs or are WONTFIXes don't count. Only bugs closed with patches do. Currently the count is 11 down, 10 to go. The goal is to be done before the weekend is through. I keep getting interrupted, however, by the continuing fallout from what has become one of the biggest faith-in-the-community destroying events I've experience. Having read a couple more angry FUD filled blog postings on this matter, proving squarely just how confused people are at the moment, I figured a picture might help.

Truth is Treason in the Empire of Lies: Linspire"Fact Sheet" Coming Soon

04/14/2008  I
Relevance: 4.74
After failing to get any response from Linspire as to why they are not holding annual shareholder meetings, I asked them publicly to do so in my last blog, in a hopes that pressure from customers, partners and shareholders would encourage them to do the right thing. Their lack of responsiveness only heightens my concern with Linspire's present management and the company's future prospects. As a shareholder, seeing Linspire's new management destroying the company gives me great concern. This week I am working on my next blog which will outline the facts as to what Linspire has done since my resignation.

Nut launches death threats at Debian women

07/04/2008  I
Relevance: 4.59
Women working on Debian have been getting death threats from a nut job who believes they're killing free software. A poll by new project leader Steve McIntyre into whether people are happy on Debian revealed one female coder had been getting the threats as thanks for her hard work. Further daggering soon revealed she was not alone. McIntyre told The Reg:"I have since discovered that several of our female developers and documenters were threatened. It was some kook in the US who made quite a name from himself harassing women for supposedly destroying the free software movement."

The lack of quality video drivers is destroying Fedora

09/29/2008  III
Relevance: 4.52
I was user of nvidia video card and I was happy to use it in F7 and F8 but unfortunately I replaced that card with a newer one. That time the card was ATI. Of course I did not check if that card is supported in Fedora 9 (I have to blame myself) and just took it. Recently I noticed the news about that how"open" ATI would be in the future. And now I experience their"openness" with my computer. After the fresh install of my Fedora I downloaded the RPM file for the Livna repository with the intention to install the video drivers for the new video card. And you can only imagine what was my reaction to see no drivers in the repository. There were only some testing and development packages and I took the risk to install them. The result was - hanging system with and without reason.
