Editor's Note: Farewell, Hello, the Journey Continues

07/21/2008  IIIIIII
Relevance: 5.52
I like the word"farewell". It carries a lot more meaning than plain old"good-bye". Wikipedia defines it as"...a wish of happiness or welfare at parting, especially a permanent departure." So it's fitting to bid Brian Proffitt, who managed Linux Today, LinuxPlanet, AllLinuxDevices, JustLinux, and LinuxPR for the past six years, a very fond farewell.

Earlier this month, the Open Source Applications Foundation (OSAF) announced a major staff reorganization, which included the departure of founder Mitch Kapor as head of the OSAF's flagship project, Chandler. After almost seven years of effort there is finally a release remotely resembling something a casual user might consider giving a try.

OLPC looks ahead with optimism

01/23/2008  IIII
Relevance: 5.21
The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project has been in the news a lot in recent months. Reports last fall that Uruguay purchased 100,000 XO laptops and soon US consumers could do the same via a special campaign soon gave way to news items about a patent lawsuit and Intel's abrupt departure from OLPC's board. Walter Bender, OLPC's president of software/content and COO, says those developments are nothing more than a bump in the road.

Flipping the Linux switch: 5 tips every new Linux user should know

01/05/2008  I
Relevance: 5.20
We're taking a departure from the norm this week and not discussing a specific piece of software. Instead, we've been thinking about what we most wished we'd been told on our first foray into Linux-land. These tips run the gamut from installation planning to how to best ask for help. We chose these tips because they are not distribution-specific, and the majority of new users will at least find a few tips apply to their situation at some point.

My review of gOS Space

04/14/2008  I
Relevance: 4.87
You will all no doubt be aware that a few months back I reviewed the original gOS, and I was enthusiastic about it. In my opinion, the original gOS was a great Linux distribution for the average computer user - someone who used it to write up a few documents, send a few emails, and surf the Internet a bit. With its emphasis on web apps, it was not only an ideal operating system for casual users, but was an indication of where desktop computing appears to be headed, with the real work being done"in the cloud", with the desktop just the front end for that. But now, gOS Space is here, and it's a radical departure from the original. So, once again I downloaded a copy and gave it a try.

Creating an oBAMP Stack: OpenBSD, Apache, MySQL, and PHP

12/17/2008  III
Relevance: 4.77
The OpenBSD, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (oBAMP) platform provides a powerful point of departure for the creation of dynamic web content. Learn the procedures for running OpenBSD 4.4 with Apache SSL, MySQL 5, and PHP 5.[I haven't tried this yet, but explanations on how to deal with dynamic Web content in OpenBSD's chrooted Apache environment are few and far between. - Steven]

Ontario LinuxFest makes an auspicious debut

10/16/2007  III
Relevance: 4.68
The first-ever Ontario LinuxFest, unapologetically modeled on Ohio's conference of the same name, took place on Saturday at the Toronto Congress Centre near the end of runway 24R at Toronto's international airport. With only a few sessions and a lot of quality speakers, the organisers kept the signal-to-noise ratio at this conference as good as it gets. The charismatic Marcel Gagné gave the first talk I attended. Gagné started his talk on what's coming in KDE 4.0, which is expected to be released in mid-December, by stating that KDE 4.0 is a radical departure from existing desktop environments, including current versions of KDE.

Former One Laptop CTO Mary Lou Jepsen On Her New Startup

01/16/2008  I
Relevance: 4.48
If only laptops could run on qi the spiritual energy that, in traditional Chinese philosophy, pervades all things. Well, if anyone has come close to making that happen, it's Mary Lou Jepsen, founding chief technology officer at the Cambridge, MA-based One Laptop Per Child Foundation (OLPC). On New Year's Day, Jepsen's long-planned departure from OLPC became official. But she hasn't gone far: the next gig for Jepsen, former CTO of Intel's display division, is Pixel Qi, a Hull, MA-based startup she has created to design and build components for low-cost information devices that could be sold to consumers right here in the United States, as well as to people in the developing world.
