Happy 15th birthday, Debian

Hello boys and girlsâ€' That's me in the Debian T-shirt above. Ilene got it for me from AboutDebian.com. I don't think I need to tell any of you that I'm proud to be a Debian user. Sure I've had (and have) my problems getting Debian to do exactly what I want on every machine on which I have it installed, but I'd call Debian ultra-reliable, easily fixable and extremely useful. I've never mistakenly hosed a Debian installation, and I've never seen a machine on which Debian won't runâ€' and run pretty well.

Debian turns 14 today!

Debian, one of my long time favorite Linux distributions turned 14 today. Without the Debian project there would be no Ubuntu. Debian was begun in August 1993 by Ian Murdock, as a new distribution which would be made openly, in the spirit of Linux and GNU. Debian is pronounced /ˈde.bi.ən/. It comes from the names of the creator of Debian, Ian Murdock, and his wife, Debra.Happy 14th birthday Debian!

Debian redefines itself with new release

04/13/2007  III
Relevance: 5.89
For much of its history, Debian has been the major noncommercial, philosophically free distribution. Now, as Debian developers and users have deserted the distro for Ubuntu, does Debian have a purpose any more? Debian 4.0, which was released this week, represents a collective effort to answer that question. The philosophy behind the release is best summarized on the home page for the Debian on the Desktop subproject, which states,"We will do everything we can to make things very easy for the novice, while allowing the expert to tweak things."

Desktop Debian Etch (and Ubuntu)

06/26/2007  IIIIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.78
I started using Debian in late 2002, today I am a Debian package maintainer and use it full time every day at my job as a Debian Sysadmin. On the flip side I’m also an Ubuntu enthusiast and now an official Member of the project, I use Xubuntu (XFCE version of Ubuntu) on my desktop, work extensively with the Ubuntu community, and attend and help organized events with the Ubuntu team here in Pennsylvania. My work with Debian trickles down into Ubuntu, as almost all of the work in Debian does, the packages I maintain end up in Ubuntu repositories, the tools developed for Debian are adopted by Ubuntu.

The Debian Installer team is proud to announce the first release candidate (RC1) of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux Etch. Debian-Installer is a program for installing Linux distributions. It is the official installer for Debian GNU/Linux. It is also one of two official installers available for Ubuntu; the other one is called Ubiquity (itself based on parts of debian-installer) and was introduced in Ubuntu 6.06. It was originally written for the Debian release sarge..

Debian& APT - Why I love it

02/13/2008  IIII
Relevance: 5.70
don't want to say its the best, but I've been using Debian, Ubuntu and other APT based Linuxes for years now. Ubuntu on desktop PC's and Debian on Servers (only because I have a few servers already on Debian and keeping all identical is worth doing). I don't run GUI's on my servers. I pretty muchuse Debian in favour of other linuxes because it is free, and updates are also free. Why do I personally use Debian on my home servers - the main answer is APT.

Support ending for Debian Sarge

03/06/2008  IIII
Relevance: 5.69
I've heard of quite a few people still running Debian Sarge -- the stable version of Debian before Etch went stable in April 2007. As per Debian policy, support for what is referred to as"old stable," in this case Sarge, is slated to last for a year after the next Debian release is declared"stable" (Etch). So now we're bumping up on March 31, 2008, and Debian is telling users about the end of updates for Sarge.
