If You Love Your Data, Set It Free

Relevance: 6.29
In the past, data was structured, secure and tightly controlled. The bad news is that the data was limited by the firewall of personnel, technologies, and process rigidity. Today, however, the demand is for just-in-time and inclusive data, moving away from a monolithic data system mentality to multiple sources of data that provide real-time inferences on consumers, activities, events and transactions.

Dynamic Data Structure Switching

Relevance: 5.86
Nick Piggin posted an efficient algorithm for converting a data structure,"this is my 'data structure switch' algorithm that can convert one data structure into another, with just a single unlikely branch in fastpaths and no locking or atomic operations (the branch is only triggered when the data structure is in the process of being converted). A pointer indirection is generally also needed when converting a global data structure."

Using Spawner To Populate SQL Database

12/04/2008  II
Relevance: 5.60
There are many reasons why you would want to generate bogus data for your database. Perhaps you’d like to know how well your databases will perform when filled with data, or maybe you just need some data so that you can start creating a front end for the database. I recently ran into the problem of not wanting to generate lots of data manually. I initially thought that I would write a shell script to do this, but figured I might as well look around first. I stumbled across a program called Spawner which is great for generating data for database testing.

Through the use of Open Profiler, users can be alerted to hidden inconsistencies and incompatibilities between data sources and target applications. Through data analysis, business users and technical analysts can communicate both data structure and content needs.

It allows even beginner programmers to work with XML in a native programming language, and in many cases doesn't require any XML expertise at all. This article introduces some discussion topics to start you thinking about how you use XML and data binding with Java.

Another way of tackling integration

09/01/2006  III
Relevance: 5.23
Of course, there are a variety of different types of integration and there are a range of different things that you can do with data integration. I am not here to suggest that there is another way of tackling data integration in general. However, there are specific aspects of data integration (and in this context I am talking specifically about the data movement aspects of integration) where there may be an alternative that is worth considering.
