Alex Knezevic's IT shop at the Marena Group Inc. was awash in a mix of proprietary, open source and custom applications, and none of them were talking to each other. One year ago, the Lawrenceville, Ga., medical garments manufacturer was stocked with Intel-based servers and desktops that ran Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. And its staff of 60 had a mix of specialized manufacturing software to push more than 200,000 custom post-surgical compression garments out the door every year.

Custom NimbleX lives up to its name with do-it-yourself install images

Do-it-yourself distributions have made great strides since Linux from Scratch, or even rPath's rBuilder Online. In the last few months, users have even been able to produce custom disk images with such tools as Fedora's Revisor and Ubuntu's Reconstructor. However, one of the most elegant tools to emerge recently is Custom NimbleX, a PHP program that allows you to construct an ISO image in your browser and then download it. Custom NimbleX lacks some polish in the interface, but is so simply and well-designed functionally that it should lead many users to NimbleX itself, the distribution on which it is based.

Quite often, we speculate about Linux grabbing a major share of the desktop PC market. But it seems the film industry are heavy users of Linux, and applications that run on Linux which include both open source and closed source custom made software. Take the popular Hollywood movie 'Scooby Doo' for instance. It was created at Rhythm and Hues studio and the whole movie was rendered and touched up using custom made software which ran on Linux.

Pardus gives Linux a custom lift

Relevance: 6.57
Apart from a KDE desktop and applications, the developers of the Pardus 2007 Linux distribution have built an entire distribution from scratch. Pardus, released last month, has its own multilingual installer, custom dependency-resolving package manager, and an INIT system that slashes boot times by several seconds. The distribution has come a long way since its first release in 2005, when it was based on Gentoo and lacked a package manager. Thanks to its custom tools, it's one of the easiest Linux distribution to run and manage.

Alan Cox on open-source development vs. proprietary development

10/25/2007  IIIIIII
Relevance: 6.47
Alan Cox emailed me this morning to note a presentation he gave way back in 2000 called"Dear Mr Brooks, or: Software engineering in the free software world." It's no surprise to me that my recent blog post (on the topic of optimally sized development teams) was better articulated by Alan many years ago. What was surprising is just how prescient Alan's talk was. And how informative. For anyone who has ever wondered how open-source software development works compared to proprietary-software development, this is an absolute must read.

I have used Window Maker for some time and have always made my own custom menus. However, the current maintainer of the Window Maker window manager gave us a small tutorial on how to add the Debian menu to a custom menu. The menu package must be installed prior to beginning this tutorial, check your software repositories. Thanks to John H. Robinson, IV (aka jaqque).
