Version Control as a Backup Tool

05/12/2008  IIIIII
Relevance: 6.52
It was not intentional, but my later work on OpenSourceToday evolved where I copied up files directly from the version control onto the server. Moreover, I started making quick fixes directly on the version control copy (local) and then loading it onto the server. That cycle, my loading, my testing and my correcting code continued until I had acceptable functionality. Despite my having a poor fit between the site and the version control directory structure, I abandoned old habits. I believe that implies a natural existing advantage, hence, I found myself relying increasingly upon the version control copy.

AMD& NVIDIA's Linux Control Panels

03/02/2008  IIIII
Relevance: 6.09
It was a year ago that AMD had replaced its aging FireGL Control Panel inside its Linux driver with the AMDCCCLE, or AMD Catalyst Control Center Linux Edition. Since that time, this Catalyst Control Center for Linux continues to mature with a few new features being added here and there, and version 2.0 could in fact be introduced in an upcoming release. At the same time, the control panel utility that ships with NVIDIA's binary driver, nvidia-settings, has stayed more or less the same for the past few years with only a few minor revisions. How do these two Linux control panels compare though when it comes to the features? For this article we have put AMDCCCLE and nvidia-settings side-by-side to compare and contrast both utilities.

Consumer-control industry and their security damnation

10/20/2007  I
Relevance: 5.91
By some ironic fortune, proprietary vendors like Apple and Microsoft will likely always suffer this damnation that their consumer-control inspired proprietary nature always brings with itself: security problems - exactly the thing they claim to prevent by being so control obsessed. You can stay damned with them or you can break free.
