Linux conference calls for papers

The call - both for the presentations to the main conference and for mini-conferences - went out on Friday, July 4, just five months after the 2008 event concluded. This will be the 10th LCA and the first to be held in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. The first conference, held in Melbourne in 1999, went under the name Conference of Australian Linux Users; there was no conference in the year 2000.

When you travel a lot, once in a while it just seems that you are on"The Trip from Hades", and you wonder why you travel as much as you do. That is the way my most recent trip to a conference called"WALC2007", held in Coro, Venezuela seemed to start. First of all, the conference invitation came late, and I was already engaged to go to another conference. However, that conference could not confirm that they could pay my travel expenses (my only request), and I eventually opted to go to Venezuela, which I had first visited in 1994, and again a few years later.

Volunteers make Vancouver PHP Conference work

More than 225 developers attended the second Vancouver PHP Conference at the University of British Columbia's Downtown Campus in Vancouver Canada this week. Organized by the Vancouver PHP Users Group, the conference attracted many of the best-known names in the PHP world, including Rasmus Lerdorf, Andrei Zmievski, Damien Seguy, and Zak Greant. The result was a well-rounded conference that shows what an experienced group of volunteer organizers can accomplish.

Open Web Vancouver shows how to run a big little conference

Building on the success of last year's Vancouver PHP Conference, the Vancouver PHP Users Association on April 14-15 drew more than 400 to the Vancouver Trade and Convention Center to learn about the trends in free and open source software on the Web. With speakers from major corporations such as Creative Commons, Facebook, Google, the Mozilla Foundation, and Sun Microsystems, and a healthy dose of the self-organization popularized by Bar Camp, the conference was in many ways a template for how a local conference can manage to offer informative and current information despite a relatively small size.

First Ubuntu Live conference set for July

Registration opened today for Ubuntu Live, the first official conference dedicated to Ubuntu. The three-day conference will be held July 22-24 in conjunction with the O'Reilly 2007 Open Source Convention, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Ore. The conference will showcase a wide-ranging program of expert-led sessions and tutorials to inform and educate the growing Ubuntu community, from power users to the simply"Ubuntu-curious," an O'Reilly spokesperson said.
