How does Linux-based virtualization really compare with VMware& MS Virtual Server?

Lately, there has been a lot of attention in the industry on the current (and future) virtualization products from VMware and Microsoft. However, the latest Linux distributions from Red Hat and SUSE now also include full range of virtualization capabilities based on the Xen hypervisor. How do they compare with VMware and Microsoft's offerings?

Comparing Linux USB flash disk distros

The recent success of the ASUS Eee PC has shown that running Linux from flash memory is now commercially viable in the consumer market. If you don't have an Eee PC, you can still run Linux from a humble USB flash disk, which will hold not only Linux but also your data. Several Linux distributions run from flash; here's how some of them compare. Some Linux distributions, such as Mandriva Flash, are specially designed to work from flash devices. Some provide installers to get them onto thumb drives, while others can be coerced onto a USB flash drive with some simple modifications. I tested five Linux distributions -- Damn Small Linux (DSL), Puppy Linux, Pendrivelinux, Ubuntu, and Mandriva Flash -- to see how they fare running from a flash disk.

Ubuntu, Kubuntu,& Xubuntu Benchmarks

With Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu each deploying a different desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, and Xfce respectively), how do each of these distributions compare performance-wise? We have taken two systems -- one with dual Intel Clovertown processors and the other an AMD Sempron -- and tested out each of these distributions in some of our commonly used Linux benchmarks to see how the performance truly stacks up. In this article we will be presenting part one of our results.

Face off: Windows vs Linux real world RAM and disk tests

Forget fear, uncertainty and doubt. How do Windows Vista and Linux really compare against each other? It's one thing to talk about the familiar applications available to Windows users contrasted with the rich suite of free open source apps for Linux, but something totally different to actually compare the loads of the two operating systems as they perform functionally identical tasks.

Five things every Linux distribution should do

03/30/2009  II
Relevance: 6.68
The search for'Active' distributions on distrowatch listed 296 distributions as of today. The explosion in the number of distributions increased the chance of getting a more personalized Linux but this resulted in lack of standards among the distributions as every distribution started using different package management/hardware detection/configuration tools.

PCBSD 7.0 ScreenShots, Professional and Clean but can it compare to current Linux Distributions?

This is Linux Dynasty's first review of any BSD flavor out there. Now I'm pretty new to the BSD scene, so I will not talk much about this distro except for the fact that it was quite easy to install and the installer looked quite professional. I personally have much to learn about BSD's port system, well BSD in general! I might give it a whirl but not probably with PCBSD. I do want to use OpenBSD but as a server system and maybe try FreeBSD for my desktop ( We will see what happens ).

Ubuntu 32-bit, 32-bit PAE, 64-bit Benchmarks

Relevance: 6.47
Coming up in our forums was a testing request to compare the performance of Linux between using 32-bit, 32-bit PAE, and 64-bit kernels. This is coming after Linus Torvalds has spoke of 25% performance differences between kernels using CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G and those without this option that allows 32-bit builds to address up to 4GB of physical RAM on a system. We decided to compare the performance of the 32-bit, 32-bit PAE, and 64-bit kernels on a modern desktop system and here are the results.

Early Ubuntu 9.10, OpenSuSE 11.2, Mandriva 2010 Benchmarks

Relevance: 6.44
Last week we provided benchmarks of Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 4, but Ubuntu is not the only Linux distribution preparing for a major update in the coming months. Also released in the past few days were OpenSuSE 11.2 Milestone 6 and Mandriva Linux 2010.0 Beta 1. To see how these three popular distributions compare, we set out to do our usual Linux benchmarking dance.

Comparing Linux Distributions - Final Results

11/12/2007  I
Relevance: 6.44
I have been experimenting with many different Linux distributions over the last month as I posted here and here. In my review of the various distributions, I was looking for ease of install and ease of use as the most important factors in my personal ranking system. I believe for Linux to win the desktop war over the next few years they have to appeal to more then just the technical folks who can install distros in their sleep and are wizards at the command line. With that said, here are the distributions I tested:
