Notice that installation Ubuntu HVM and runtime performance at opensolaris 2008.11 Dom0 is extremely low versus same HVM perfomance at Xen 3.3.1 openSUSE 11.1 Dom0 on the same box with C2D E8400 and 8 GB RAM. Actually, Linux as well as Nevada HVM DomUs demonstrate very low performance even been installed on zvols. Paravirtual DomUs behave at opensolaris 2008.11 absolutely normal been installed on zvol’s images.

Power Mac G4/466 a pretty good Linux platform

I haven't booted the Power Mac G4/466 running Debian Etch in a while, but I did so today because I'm about to move the box and its massive LaCie electron22blue monitor. So I wanted to power it up, do a software update and get it on the cart. This is a nice box on which to run Debian. I've complained at length at how poorly Fedora 9 installed and autoconfigured on this box and how startlingly better Debian Etch did with that same task. Sorry to repeat that, but it bears repeating.

Just dealing with the OS error message. This post has nothing whatsoever to do with marriage ;) Here's a question that gets asked a lot (and, consequently, answered a lot ;) on the boards. How do you go about dealing with a situation in which you're trying to take care of some business on your Linux or Unix box and you get stopped with the"Argument list too long" error message? It's probably happened to all of us at some point, but it's fairly simple to avoid, and in more than one way.

The biggest news of the week was the final decision in the case of SCO vs. Novell in a Utah court. LXer.com summed it up this way:"Novell Wins, SCO Loses." In other news, big box retailers across the United States stocked their shelves with netbooks preloaded with Linux in time for Black Friday, the day after the American Thanksgiving holiday and traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year. Target and Best Buy stores displayed the ASUS Eee PC 900a for US$299 this week. Other netbooks with prices as low as US$199 are expected on shelves by Friday. In the news section, Paul Frields challenges the often-made claims that Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution; openSUSE announces Zypper 1.0 and plans for Zypper 2, Gentoo Linux summarises the Gentoo Council functions and activities, sidux celebrates its second birthday, and Shift Linux announces a major shift in the direction of its Ubuntu-based distribution. Finally, we are pleased to announce that the new editor of DistroWatch Weekly is Chris Smart of the Kororaa and MakeTheMove.net fame.

Kicking The Beast

In an effort to help proliferate the Linux Desktop, HeliOS Solutions has contacted a number of Big Box stores and smaller businesses throughout the Austin Metro Area and asked them if we could set up professional and attractive displays for Linux Live CD's. Three are in as long as the displays are professional. One of them is balking because they don't want Microsoft suing them for Intellectual Property violations. This IP business has begun to get tiresome. Here's how we can make them either show the code or shut the hell up.
