Mach Boot: The live CD that supposedly boots in 10 seconds

Catching my eye from this week's Distrowatch Weekly: MACH BOOT - a live CD that boots in 10 seconds. TEN seconds? I'm lucky to get anything to boot in less than three minutes. And I've never heard of Mach Boot. But I am intrigued. When an obscure distro gets mentioned in Distrowatch, it's a recipe for an overloaded server, but I will try to download, burn and boot Mach Boot to see how quickly it, in fact does boot. And whether it works at all.

Smart Boot Manager - An OS Independent Boot Manager

While perusing some Linux stories today, I came across a reference to using SBM, Smart Boot Manager. SBM runs from a floppy disk and allows systems to boot from a selection of disks, effectively allowing one to bypass an old BIOS and have more advanced boot options. From the SBM site:"Smart BootManager is an os independent BootManager which has easy to use interface and many other features. The main goals of SBM are to be absolutely OS independent, flexible and full-featured. It has all of the features needed to boot a variety of OS."

A dual-boot OLPC XO with Linux and Windows XP?

News this morning that the OLPC project is working with Microsoft to deliver a dual-boot XO laptop is causing shock waves among many of the OLPC faithful. Nicholas Negroponte was quoted in the ComputerWorld story as saying,"We are working with them very closely to make a dual-boot system so that, like on an Apple, you can boot either one up. The version that's up and running of Windows on the XO is very fast, it's very, very successful. We're working very hard to do both."

Measuring Fedora's Boot Performance

Last month we had measured Ubuntu's boot performance via the open-source Bootchart utility and had done this on all Ubuntu releases between Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and the latest development build at the time for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. From this testing we had found the boot time to decrease with each official release and the maximum disk throughput increasing. With Fedora 9 Sulphur due out next month, we have done this same boot performance testing on the Fedora side with Core 4, Core 5, Core 6, 7, 8, and 9 Rawhide.

PandaLabs detects new rootkit attack that can chang Linux MBR when running Windows

Not really open source news, but still it might be valuable for those running a Win/(Lin/BSD) dual boot: PandaLabs detected a new kind of trojan (has to be Windows) that overwrites the Master Boot Record, and upon inspection of the MBR passes the original MBR of which it made a backup. This master boot 'virus' could run too if you boot Linux, before Linux is started. You can fix it by running 'fdisk /fixmbr' from some kind of Windows bootdisk PandaLabs suggest, but of course you could also do this using GRUB from a Linux/BSD LiveCD.
