What Microsoft Could Gain from OSS and Linux

06/14/2007  III
Relevance: 6.08
Last time, we discussed Microsoft, their approach to protecting patents and why the enforcement of this is going to cost them much more than just some market share. Today, we will be taking this a step further by examining what they are losing out on by continuing with their dinosaur approach to creative property.

Torvalds calls flexibility the 'biggest strength' of Linux

11/26/2007  IIII
Relevance: 5.29
I made this same point over the weekend in a post or three. But when it comes from Linus Torvalds, it means more. When asked in an InformationWeek Q&A how Linux compares with Windows, Torvalds didn't go into a marketing discussion of Feature Y over Feature X. Instead, he discussed the strength of Linux's process/approach over Windows'"We are Microsoft--trust us to be your god" approach.

CIO's Take a Top Down Approach to Open Source

08/24/2006  IIIII
Relevance: 5.13
CIOs are taking over from those in the trenches and leading the charge into open source. Experts say enterprise use of open source has long been the provenance of developers and other rank-and-file IT pros, but as open source matures and more enterprise-ready tools become available, CIOs are taking over, bringing a new top-down approach to adoption.

Sidux 2007-03 Review - The Sexiest.

09/10/2007  II
Relevance: 4.81
Sidux 2007-03 is a Sid-based Live CD. For those who need a"more-friendly" and more stable Debian sid, then Sidux is for you. I think Sidux would also appeal to those users who prefer a rolling-release type of Linux distro, so that they don't have to reinstall the resident Linux distro whenever the"hot cake" arrives every 4 to 6 months. Other Linux distros taking such approach are Debian Etch, Gentoo Linux, Arch Linux, etc. By the way, MEPIS LLC is going to to implement the same rolling-release approach in its much awaited SimplyMEPIS 7.0 too.

Interview with Eric S. Raymond

01/25/2008  II
Relevance: 4.68
Every field of knowledge has writing that defines the field. In the open source field one of the key essays is 'The Cathedral and the Bazaar' by Eric Steven Raymond, or ESR as he is often known. In the essay Eric S. Raymond compares and contrasts the cathedral as a highly structured, highly organized approach of creating software against the faster adapting less structured bazaar like approach used in open source. In this interview Mr. Raymond talks about a number of the projects he is involved in.

Key mobile Linux platform out in March

02/05/2008  I
Relevance: 4.58
The LiMo Foundation has announced the first release of its mobile Linux platform. The foundation is one of several industry consortia seeking to create a standardized approach to Linux-based handsets. Its main rival at the moment is the Linux Phone Standards Forum, which is focused on creating shared, open specifications. The members of LiMo, by contrast, have taken the approach of creating a shared, open platform upon which they can build proprietary applications. The Lips Forum released its first set of specifications in December of last year.

New GPLv3 draft takes new approach to patents, lock-down technologies

03/28/2007  III
Relevance: 4.55
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has released the third draft of the revised third version of the GNU General Public License (GPLv3). Some of the changes in the new draft, such as the increased clarification and legal language, or the housekeeping changes that reflect new aspects of the license are likely to be accepted. However, the license also includes a new approach to the controversial issue of lock-down technologies as well as more explicit language about patents, including language designed to prevent a re-occurrence of agreements such as the one that Novell entered into with Microsoft -- all of which is apt to kindle heated debate as the revision process enters its final stages after fifteen months of intensive work.
