An answer to Walter Bender's question 22

08/29/2008  I
Relevance: 6.11
Walter Bender's question 22: What“shoulders of giants” should we stand on? What is it that children should learn? Are there any universals? How do children decide whom and what to believe? I've been providing what I think is a good answer to these questions for some time now but often the response is muted and contradictory. It's not my original answer, it originates from Alan Kay and his analysis originates from anthropologists. The answer is not that children should learn universals but there needs to be more focus on what Kay has called the"non universals". From anthropological research of over 3000 human cultures, Kay presented two lists, the first were universals, the things that all human cultures have in common.

What kind of crap is that? They are purchasing software so that the software they've already bought will work. You have the answer to that problem right in the palm of your hand. Why haven't you mortgaged the farm to advertise the obvious answer to their problem?

Apache packages: creating a support vacuum

OSS in the real worldComment Right at the end of OSCon in September, I got the opportunity to harangue Ubuntu's Mark Shuttleworth about the support vacuum distros such as his create. He didn't have an answer. OK, I was putting him on the spot, but I don't think he'd have done much better if he'd had notice of the question. Frankly, I don't think there is an answer.

Relevance: 5.23
Recently, I stumbled upon a"People Behind KDE" interview from September of last year with Derek Kite. The interviewer asked,"What is KDE's killer app? And Why?" Kite's answer completely threw me. His answer was,"Konqueror. Because Linux users are first class citizens for this browser."

What could you do with fat fiber?

08/04/2007  I
Relevance: 5.18
Two years ago, Bob Frankston wrote Why Settle for Just 1%? while in the midst of his ramp-up as a Verizon FiOS customer. The question is still on the table. I'd like us to help answer it by re-phrasing the question: What could we, as Linux developers and users, do with fiber to our homes and businesses? The answer should look like good business for the Verizons, RCNs, Comcasts and other fiber-deployers to be in. Let's help them imagine benefits to carrier incumbency other than doing the same old thing, only faster.

How good is open source support?

Relevance: 5.07
The cheap answer is“as good as you make it.” The real answer is more complex. As our friend Big Money Matt notes today, open source vendors are not really selling software, just support, and they have an image problem.[There is a poll attached to this one. -Az]
