A Beginner’s Dozen of No-Cost Computing Tools

02/07/2007  I
Relevance: 5.49
Ah, survived the holidays! But if your bank balance is anything like mine right now, you’re looking for ways to save money. Here’s one means of economizing -- stop buying computer software. No, I’m not advocating becoming a pirate. Johnny Depp can pull it off, but I wouldn’t recommend it for educators. (Too few of us look that good in mascara.) Instead, take a serious look at some high quality software that is now available -- at no cost.

Integrating Ubuntu with a Windows-based network is harder than it should be

12/14/2007  IIIIII
Relevance: 5.11
I've been using and advocating free software for around six years. When studying and then working as a freelance writer, migrating an office seemed so simple -- draw up a list of comparable programs and, over a reasonable period, move your staff across. But over the past few weeks I've been trying to use Ubuntu Gutsy on my desktop PC in a Windows-based office, and whilst most things work just fine, it's far from the seamless integration I was hoping for.

Microsoft's 'Men in Black' kill Florida open standards legislation

04/17/2007  IIIIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.08
It was just a bit of text advocating open data formats that was slipped into a Florida State Senate bill at the last minute with no fanfare, but within 24 hours three Microsoft-paid lobbyists, all wearing black suits, were pressuring members of the Senate Committee on Governmental Operations (COGO) to remove the words they didn't like from Senate bill 1974.

The critics are wrong: KDE 4 doesn't need a fork

07/02/2008  I
Relevance: 4.90
After the recent release KDE 4.1 beta 2 and openSUSE 11 with KDE 4.0.4, some critics have been especially vocal in expressing their displeasure with the KDE 4 user interface paradigms. The debate has grown increasingly caustic as critics and supporters engage in a war of words over the technology. The controversy has escalated to the point where some users are now advocating a fork in order to move forward the old KDE 3.5 UI paradigms. As an observer who has closely studied each new release of KDE 4, I'm convinced that the fork rhetoric is an absurdly unproductive direction for this debate.

Fedora goes to a community-dominated board

04/23/2008  II
Relevance: 4.87
I'm very pleased to report that with the post-Fedora 9 election, the Board composition will be a better reflection of the strides our community has made in self-organization and self-governance, and of our healthy partnership with Red Hat. Starting with this election, the Board will move to a composition of five (5) community-elected seats and four (4) Red Hat-appointed seats. This is an issue I've been advocating over the past couple of weeks, and I'm delighted to be able to make this change following my first release as Fedora Project Leader.

Open source: What you should learn from the French

09/06/2008  III
Relevance: 4.84
A decade ago, European countries leapt out of the gate to take the lead in the radical open-source movement -- none more so than France -- and left U.S. developers in the proverbial dust. Through policies and high-profile projects, the French Republic for years has been advocating for all open source all the time, in government and education. And France is not stopping: This summer, an economic commission set up by French President Nicolas Sarkozy recommended tax benefits to stimulate even more open-source development.

Government of Japan Embraces Open Software Standards

07/13/2007  II
Relevance: 4.46
The OpenDocument Format Alliance (ODF Alliance), the leading organization advocating for openness and accessibility to government documents and information, today congratulated Japan for adopting a policy under which government ministries and agencies will solicit bids from software vendors whose products support internationally recognized open standards. The new guidelines, available from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, were designed to be implemented by government ministries and agencies. The interoperability framework also suggests that the guidelines would also be useful for private industry.

Geek's perspective: Advocating Linux

Keyto in his articleUnderstanding the Common User points that"everything should be as simple as it is.. or even simpler" and warns that converting a common user to Linux without giving him enough protection leads to a imminent failure. Karol Trojanowski, in a rebuttalGet Real or How NOT To Convert Your Grandma to Linux stresses that dumbing down is not the key to success, understanding is. Both articles are a must-read for Linux nerds trying to convert anyone on their way.

Free software group challenges educational software patent

01/26/2007  IIII
Relevance: 4.08
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is going to review the patent held by e-learning software maker Blackboard Inc., in the wake of a challenge by a group advocating open source software. The USPTO responded Thursday to a November 2005 request from the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) for the review on behalf of three open source educational software projects. In granting the review, the Patent Office found that prior art cited in SFLC's request raises"a substantial new question of patentability" regarding all 44 claims of Blackboard's patent.[I used blackboard at ASU and its EULA was several pages long then, but patenting Teacher-to Students communication? That's over the top. - Scott]
