Administer servers remotely with Web Console

05/02/2008  II
Relevance: 6.25
If you need to administer a remote server but don't feel like installing a complete, complex application like Webmin, try Web Console, a modern, over-the-Web, AJAX-based solution that's easy to configure and use. The GPL-licensed Web Console lets remote users access a shell and execute any commands -- subject to their rights, of course. You can also use the Web interface to upload or download files to or from the server, edit files there, and back up and restore files or databases. In other words, you can do any task you could do if you were sitting in front of the server itself. Other interesting features include a simple installation process (which doesn't even require root permission), secure connection using HTTPS, and quick refreshes using AJAX technology, for a user experience that closely matches an actual console.

Review: Citadel: A Bastion of Groupware Functionality

Relevance: 5.16
Citadel is 100% GPL, and doesn't play games with making either binary or source downloads easily available. If I had to describe Citadel in a word, it would be"simplicity". It is a complex application with a lot of power and flexibility, but it's easy to install and administer.

Review: Network Warrior

The subtitle of Donahue's book immediately caught my eye;Everything You Need to Know That Wasn't on the CCNA Exam. Since most CCNA certification books advertise themselves as containing everything you need to know for the exam, why do you need to know information not relevant for the test? Perhaps because after having earned your CCNA, you still might not be in much of a position to administer Cisco-based networks. How could that be?

The new WordPress

How do I like WordPress 2.5? In a word,"wow." Its developers promised that WordPress 2.5, released last month, was more than just"a fresh coat of paint." Instead, they said, 2.5 was a"from the ground up" redesign. The goal was to create a new WordPress that would be powerful but easy to administer. After upgrading my WordPress installation and using the new format, I found that the WordPress development team has done a fabulous job of making WordPress even better than it was. It's not perfect, but it's darn close.
